Music for a Sunday evening before Monday
The weekend is finishing; the week is announcing itself. The music can't decide which mood you're having.
Sunday evening has the only mood I know that nobody really wants. The weekend is finishing; the week is announcing itself. Music for it has to acknowledge both without making either one worse.
The classic mistake is to lean too far into either side. Music that's too cheerful is dishonest about Monday; music that's too melancholy makes the evening sadder than it needs to be. What works is something that respects the transition — slow but not low, warm but not nostalgic.
Reading-room music fits well, because reading is what a lot of Sunday evenings turn into anyway. Wellness fits if you're going to bed early. Lo-fi mostly doesn't, because it has a kitchen energy that the evening has already left behind.
For some people Sunday evening is the best hour of the week and for some it's the worst. The music can't decide which one you're having. It can only be there at the same temperature for both.
