Music for the first coffee
The first half hour after waking is more delicate than the rest of the day. Here's what survives it.
The first half hour after waking is more delicate than the rest of the day. The wrong music makes it feel like the day has started before you have, and you spend the rest of the morning trying to catch up.
Brief: quiet enough that you don't have to talk over it, slow enough that it doesn't rush you into the kitchen, structured enough that you don't fall back asleep at the table.
What works for me is piano with a lot of space, ambient I've heard a hundred times before, anything that respects the fact you haven't said a word yet. The lo-fi playlist works at low volume. The wellness one is too languid for daylight. The focus one demands you sit down.
It is, in other words, the only hour where familiar beats new. I keep saving discoveries for after the coffee, when I have ears to spare.
